Advocating for the Arts

Some problems the community faced in Chapter 12 were lack of understanding and general confusion about the project. I don't think Mrs. Clark and the others involved in the Pinwheel Project meant to disrespect or oppose the work that military veterans did, but were looking at war as a bigger picture. I don't think they meant for their art to personally attack those who fought, but instead make a point to those who started the fighting and violence. It's very unfortunate that they got shut down by their administration before they could explain their side of the story or display their beliefs freely. However, I understand why other teacher didn't want to get involved in the controversy. Maybe though if the other teachers did try to stand with Mrs. Clark and help her communicate her intentions, the community could see their point. I think it's just important to be clear with your intentions on a project and communicate with the public on why you created the piece or exhibit.

These three resources seem to be really useful for advocating for the arts. The National Art Education Association has a page (linked above) that is designated just for ways and techniques to actively engage in advocating for the arts. It also has many PDFs and articles to read about advocacy. The Americans for the Arts also has a page similar to this. NAMTA Art matters is unique because the site above is specifically for advocating for arts. The entire website is a tool for this along with news in the art world.

I wanted to become an art teacher because I think it's so vital for children to be able to express themselves and grow in creativity. Art has so many benefits and I want to help share the beauty it has with others. I am a strong believer that anyone can do art and can be successful in it no matter their "talent" or "skill level" and I hope to empower my future students with that belief. Art is essential to have in the schools because it helps students expand in their creative thinking, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Bloom's taxonomy is a prime example of why art is significant in a student's academic life. The highest form of thinking according to Bloom's taxonomy is creating. Students are constantly creating by designing, assembling, developing, and so much more in art class and are able to reach this extremely high level of thinking. This is why art matters to me.
